Understanding Our Methodology:
The Proficient Measures™ Assessment

At the heart of Proficient Measures™ lies a robust and time-honored framework known as the ILR methodology, which stands for Interagency Language Roundtable.

This gold standard was initiated in 1959 and solidified in 1979, bringing together expertise from various government agencies to define language proficiency uniformly.

What Exactly is the ILR?

The ILR is not just a scale but a collaborative effort that synchronizes language proficiency standards across different organizations. This synergy ensures consistency and comparability in language proficiency assessments.

Skill Level Spectrum

Guided by the ILR's comprehensively structured Skill Level Descriptions, Proficient Measures™ evaluates language ability across a spectrum ranging from Level 0, indicating no proficiency, to Level 5, which signifies native or near-native fluency. This meticulous framework allows us to pinpoint proficiency with precision.

Dimensions of Proficiency

Understanding that language is multifaceted, the ILR scale delves into four critical areas of language use:

  • Speaking: The ability to converse with clarity and sophistication.

  • Listening: The capacity to comprehend spoken language, from conversations to presentations.

  • Reading: The aptitude for understanding written texts, ranging from documents to digital media.

  • Writing: The skill to communicate effectively through the written word.

As our client, you have the flexibility to select any combination of these dimensions to align the assessment with your specific requirements, ensuring a targeted evaluation of language skills that matter most for your organizational needs.
